Where to hang your curtains?
Sounds like a daft question, but you can really alter the way your window and room looks with few simple tweaks.
It’s a personal issue, but I have a bit of a thing about curtains that are too short.
It’s like when trousers are neither cropped or ankle length, but that they should be long, but don’t quite sit on your shoes in a good way.
Fitting your curtains are the same - and when fitted well, it can completely change your space and really frame your window to elevate the ambience and give your room a polished, considered look.
There’s a weird myth that your curtains should stick to being around 10-15cm above the recess and go past each side of the recess about 15-20cm too, while the drop hangs absolutely anywhere between the sill and the floor.
Of course in some houses this can’t be avoided and is the absolute minimum hopefully. However, if you’re able to - take them higher and right to the floor - it lifts your eye-line up, makes the most of the height and your room feels taller.
I like to think in thirds. If you can take the curtain pole or track up two thirds between the top of the recess and the ceiling or coving at least - it feels balanced.
And, if space allows - go wider than you think too. This enables you to draw back the curtains fully and it opens up the window to really maximise the light on offer.
As a guide I personally like a minimum of 30cm either side of the recess and an absolute minimum of 20cm above - but it does depend on the proportions of your room - you could definitely go higher and wider, or even wall-to-wall and floor-to-ceiling!
If you’re worried about where the curtains should sit on the floor - let them slouch on the floor for a more relaxed feel, or if you want a smarter crisper look or if you’re worried about them getting dirty - then try just letting them kiss the floor, or around 5mm-1cm off above.
