Layering Textures

If you want to keep a room interesting, you haven’t always got to overload it with colour and pattern.  By adding in and layering up textures, it keeps the eye moving around the room and stimulated. Texture should be about mixing opposing surfaces that have a harmony in their tension - too many of the same texture looks flat and dull. Think about the textures scale, direction and proportions too, a mix of sized always works best.

When thinking about how to use texture it’s easy to think of always going neutral - this does always looks good and is very restful,  however, you can still create a harmonic effect by using colour - just not too many.  Keep the palette simple so the surfaces can be the stars, mix smooth stones and woods with chunky weaves and rough rattan, maybe the same tone on the walls but using a natural grass cloth.
